Member of the House of Representatives; Liberal Democratic Party. He was elected 10 times (winning consecutive elections since his first election).
In 1982, he graduated from the School of Law, Waseda University, and joined Long-Term Credit Bank of Japan, Ltd. He was elected to the House of Representatives for the first time in 1993, and served in a number of important positions, including as a member of the House Steering Committee (parliamentary proceedings officer), LDP Director General for Accounting, and Minister of State for Special Missions in the Cabinet Office, as well as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2012, Minister of Defense in 2005, and Chairman of the Policy Research Council. He became the Prime Minister of Japan in the same year.
