Ken Hasebe is the Mayor of Shibuya Ward since 2016. Hasebe was also known as the founder of Green Bird, a world wide NPO which conducts street cleaning activities with local community. He became a city council member in 2003. In 2012, Hasebe introduced the statute that recognized cohabiting same sex couples as being in a relationship equivalent to marriage. In 2015, the statue was approved and Shibuya became the Japan’s first city that provides partnership certificates to LGBTQ community.
